Es un tambor ceremonial, el instrumento musical más importante de la cultura mapuche, utilizado por el/la machi (chamán, curandero/a, hechicero/a) para los rituales religiosos y culturales, así como durante la rogativa del Ngillatun (rito anual de fertilidad).
